Red River

A river in Wisconsin

About Red River

The Red River runs 27 miles through Langlade and Shawano counties, through Phlox and the settlement that shares its name, past Morgan and Thornton. The survey puts 308 acres of surface and 67 miles of bank on it.

Forty-two miles across its system are classified as Class I, Class II and Class III trout water with an Exceptional Resource Water listing. Musky are managed as stocking-dependent with reproduction unknown, and smallmouth habitat is classified as wadable warm water.

One public landing is on record. This is a trout river first, and access to it is on foot.

Trout regulations vary by reach and by season. Check the current DNR trout regulations and access maps before fishing it.

Fishing license

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
