Marengo River

A river in Wisconsin

About Marengo River

The Marengo River runs 17 miles through Ashland County, through the village of Marengo and past Sanborn, High Bridge and Minersville, on its way to the Bad River. The survey gives it 134 acres of surface and 45 miles of bank.

Fifty-three miles are classified as Class II and Class III trout water — more than three times the river's own length, because the classification follows its tributary system as well as the main stem. It carries an Outstanding Resource Water listing and is also on the impaired waters list. Walleye are classified as natural reproduction only, and smallmouth habitat as wadable cool and warm water.

No public boat landing is on record. This is wading water in steep, wooded country.

Trout regulations vary by reach and by season. Check the current DNR rules and access maps before fishing it.

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
