Jump River

A river in Wisconsin

About Jump River

The Jump River runs 22 miles through Rusk, Taylor and Chippewa counties, through Sheldon and the settlement that shares the river's name, before reaching the Chippewa. The survey gives it 488 acres of surface and 59 miles of bank.

The state manages musky here as natural reproduction plus stocking, and walleye as natural reproduction only — that second classification is the one worth noting, because it means the population sustains itself. Smallmouth habitat spans nursery water through non-wadable coarse and fine substrate, which describes a river with real depth in places.

No public boat landing is on record. Access is from bridges and roadside.

Check the current Wisconsin DNR regulations before keeping fish.

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
