Flambeau River
A river in Wisconsin
About Flambeau River
The Flambeau runs 79 miles through Iron, Price, Sawyer, Ashland and Rusk counties, from below the Turtle Flambeau Flowage down past Park Falls and Winter toward the Chippewa. The survey gives it 2,297 acres of surface and 171 miles of bank.
Access says a good deal about the river. Of the fifteen public landings on record, most are carry-in or canoe landings — Beaver Dam, Camp 41, DeMars Bridge, Dix Dox. There is a county highway ramp at County E, but this is largely a river reached by carrying a boat to it, which keeps the traffic down.
The state manages musky here as natural reproduction plus stocking, walleye as both natural reproduction only and stocking-supplemented depending on the reach, and lake sturgeon as naturally reproducing. Smallmouth habitat runs from nursery water to non-wadable coarse substrate.
Check the current DNR regulations for the stretch being fished.

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
