Coon Creek

A river in Wisconsin

About Coon Creek

Coon Creek runs 10 miles through the coulee country of Vernon County, through Chaseburg and past Coon Valley, before reaching the Mississippi near Stoddard. The survey puts 109 acres of surface and 38 miles of bank on it.

Thirty-seven miles across its system are classified as Class I, Class II and Class III trout water, with an Exceptional Resource Water listing. It is also on the impaired waters list. Smallmouth habitat is classified as wadable cool and warm water lower down.

This is the heart of Driftless spring-creek country: cold, spring-fed water running fast in a narrow valley, with the coulee walls close on both sides.

No public boat landing is on record, and none is needed: this is water fished on foot. Trout regulations here vary by stream and by season, and access depends on public easements. Check the current DNR trout regulations and access maps.

Fishing license

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
