Brunsweiler River

A river in Wisconsin

About Brunsweiler River

The Brunsweiler is small — 11 acres of mapped surface and four miles of bank in the survey — and it sits in the hill country of Ashland County near Marengo and Minersville, in the Bad River system.

What it carries is out of all proportion to its size. It is a federally designated Wild and Scenic river with an Outstanding Resource Water listing. Eleven miles are classified as Class II and Class III trout water. Musky are managed across all three of the state's categories on different reaches — self-sustaining, natural reproduction plus stocking, and stocking with reproduction unknown. Smallmouth habitat is classified as nursery and wadable warm water.

There is no public boat landing, and on a river this size there would be no use for one. This is wading water, in a gorge, in country that is hard to get into and quiet once you are there.

Trout regulations vary by reach and by season. Check the current DNR rules and access maps before fishing it.

Fishing license

Wisconsin sells them online. Buy one from the state. We don’t know whether you need one — that depends on your age, where you live, the water, and what your guide’s own license covers.
