Amnicon River

A river in Wisconsin

About Amnicon River

The Amnicon runs 19 miles through Douglas County to Lake Superior, east of Superior itself, and passes through Amnicon Falls on the way — a series of falls and rapids over ancient rock, and the reason most people know the river's name. The survey puts 239 acres of surface and 61 miles of bank on it.

For a Lake Superior tributary of this size, the designations are unusually broad. Musky are managed as natural reproduction plus stocking, walleye as stocking plus natural reproduction, and smallmouth habitat is classified as nursery and wadable warm water.

Two public accesses are on record. Like most north-shore rivers, what runs up it seasonally matters as much as what lives in it, and the falls are a natural limit on how far that can go.

Lake Superior tributary rules can differ from inland regulations. Check the current DNR rules for the reach being fished.
