Mississippi isn?t generally thought of as a fly fishing state, but for those who understand how much fun catching bass and panfish on a fly rod can be, Mississippi has a lot to offer. In addition to having excellent warmwater fly fishing options, being situated on the Gulf Coast means there are some incredible saltwater opportunities to be enjoyed.

You?ll find bass and a variety of panfish in nearly any pond, creek, and ditch in Mississippi, but several rivers in the southeast corner of the state, such as the Chickasawhay or Pascagoula Rivers, offer a more scenic warmwater fly fishing experience. With cypress-lined banks and tannin-stained waters, both rivers hold spotted bass, largemouth bass, and a plethora of different sunfish species including the local favorite: crappie. The Pearl River and its many tributaries are also excellent streams to explore with a fly rod. If you?re more interested in stillwater fishing, Mississippi has 119 public lakes holding all the popular warmwater fish species, with largemouth bass and crappie being the most actively pursued. Pickwick Lake in northeast Mississippi on the Alabama border is one of the more popular and productive bass lakes in the state, and lakes such as Tippah County Lake and Okhissa are where much of the best crappie fishing takes place.

Beyond Mississippi?s warmwater fishing, the Gulf Coast remains the focus of many fly anglers. A series of barrier islands separates Mississippi's bays from the rest of the Gulf and creates miles of shallow water mudflats and oyster reefs which provide perfect habitat for the favorite saltwater game of the South. Just about anywhere along the coast from the Louisiana border to the Alabama border will hold redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, pompano, and though rare, tarpon.
