Kansas is a great place to be a warmwater fly angler. Thousands of ponds and lakes throughout the state hold promising numbers of largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, saugers, and other species. Fishing for carp with a fly rod has become popular among fly anglers in Kansas, and there are some who even go after catfish with a fly.

Big game seekers head to reservoirs like Wilson Reservoir in central Kansas to chase huge striped bass with streamers and poppers, often catching fish over 20 pounds. Melvern Reservoir in east Kansas is a favorite spot to catch smallmouth bass along rocky shorelines, with crappie and walleye available as well. For big largemouth bass, LaCygne Lake near the Missouri border is where catching a 10-pound plus fish is a real possibility.

For those in need of a cold water fix, the Kansas Department of Wildlife stocks many lakes and ponds with rainbow trout from November 1st through April 15th. Most of the stocked trout fishing takes place in stillwater, but below Kanopolis Lake, a small tailwater stream (locally called a ?seep stream?) gives anglers the closest thing to a natural trout stream experience one can find in Kansas, and there?s even a fly fishing only section.
